The Engenheiros sem Fronteiras – Rio de Janeiro Chapter, aka ESF-Rio, was founded in 2014 aiming to develop projects along with the communities in situation of social vulnerability in the city and its neighborhood. This chapter’s objective is to seek quality of life for population, encouraging the graduation of future engineers, environmental education, conservation, preservation and recovering of environment and increase green areas in the city, in addition of bringing practical knowledge for the students involved, joining the excellence of teaching, research and university extension, ethics and respect to others. Currently, the chapter has six directorships: General, Communication and Marketing, People Management, Strategic Management and Process, Projects and Finances. The Projects Directory is subdivided in Projects Lines: Sanitation Now, Solar Energy, Community Engineering, Computing, Urban Mobility and Reform Without Borders. The chapter’s projects portfolio has 12 concluded projects, 11 running projects and several actions/activities that cover cleansing of touristic points in the city, charity bazaar, among other activities.

Currently, one of the main projects is Sustainable Education, which aims to offer the opportunity for young people who are in social risk to have a closer contact to sustainable engineering systems, transforming them into a practical laboratory to offer educational and training classes. Another project that stands out is the Sustainable Shelter, which provides the installation of sustainable systems composed of photovoltaic energy and use of rainwater in children’s shelters, with the objective of reducing the electricity and water bills, as well as the environmental benefits. These two projects were already performed in two places, totalling 151 people directly and 253 indirectly impacted. 

It counts on the support from the other chapters in Rio de Janeiro state (as Nova Iguaçu, Niterói e Duque de Caxias), which has been enriching for the feeling of belonging to the network.

The chapter is promoting projects to produce and distribute antiseptic gel to vuulnerable communities.They already have partners to production, but they need to collect the raw materials. The campaign is on catarse for a crowd founding, in order to know more contact the chapter.
